Alexandre Dumas, whose birth name was Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie and who died on December 5, 1870, is also known as Alexandre Dumas, père. He is one of the most widely read French authors due to the fact that his writings have been translated into approximately one hundred different languages. A number of his high-adventure historical books, such as The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later, were first published as serials.
Since the early 20th century, approximately 200 cinema adaptations of his novels have been made. Though Dumas left his final novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine, unfinished when he passed away, it was finished by a scholar and released in 2005, where it quickly became a hit.
