The Children on The Hill Summery
Vi and Eric are living with their grandmother, Dr. Helen Hildreth, who runs a psychiatric treatment facility next door to their house in 1978. Their grandmother brings a girl from the facility home one day to be their new sister. Vi begins to question their grandmother’s methods as Vi and Eric teach her everything she knows about monsters. Meanwhile, in the present, a podcaster investigates a child abduction and monster sighting in a small town, believing it is linked to her long-lost sister.
The Children on the Hill, in true McMahon fashion, combines horror with deep family relationships in a particularly eerie read. However, I was put off by her latest book’s monster theme. I understand McMahon was inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but I much preferred her previous ghost-themed novels. I admit that the twist was well done, but I didn’t like how McMahon tied up all the loose ends rather than leaving you with an eerie open ending. I know it’s nitpicky. Nonetheless, I believe McMahon’s fans will be pleased with The Children on the Hill.
