Switchboard Soldiers PDF Book Download Summary

General John Pershing landed in France in June 1917 with the goal of establishing American forces in Europe. He was unable to communicate with troops on the field very immediately. Pershing required operators who could connect several calls quickly and precisely, speak fluent French and English, remain calm under fire, and be completely discrete, as the calls often contain sensitive information.

Nearly all well-trained American telephone operators were women at the time, yet they were not allowed to enlist or vote in most states. Despite this, the US Army Signal Corps began recruiting them right away.

Grace Banker of New Jersey, an AT&T switchboard instructor and alumna of Barnard College; Marie Miossec, a Frenchwoman and aspiring opera singer; and Valerie DeSmedt, a twenty-year-old Pacific Telephone operator from Los Angeles, were among the more than 7,600 women who answered.

Under the Articles of War, they were among the first women to be sworn into the United States Army. Each call had taken one minute for the male soldiers they had replaced. The soldiers on the switchboard could accomplish it in five seconds.

The prospect of death was real—the women toiled while bombs rained down around them as did the threat of a deadly new disease: the Spanish Flu. Not all of the phone operators would be able to stay alive.

The women of the United States Army Signal Corps served with distinction and played a critical part in Allied victory. Until now, their story has never been the topic of a novel.
