How The Word is Passed PDF Book Download Summary

Beginning with his birthplace of New Orleans, Clint Smith takes the reader on a remarkable tour of monuments and landmarks, both historical and not, that tell an intergenerational tale of how slavery has shaped our nation’s collective history and ourselves.

It’s the story of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello plantation in Virginia, where he published letters extolling the need for liberty while enslaved over 400 people. It’s the narrative of the Whitney Plantation, one of the few former plantations dedicated to preserving the lives and labor of the enslaved people who kept it going. It’s the story of Angola, a former plantation turned maximum-security prison in Louisiana, where Black men labor for almost no pay across 18,000 acres of land. And it’s the narrative of Blandford Cemetery, where tens of thousands of Confederate troops were laid to rest.

How the Word Is Passed is a deeply researched and moving exploration of the legacy of slavery and its imprint on centuries of American history. It shows how some of our country’s most important stories are hidden in plain sight whether in places we drive by on our way to work, on holidays like Juneteenth or in entire neighborhoods like downtown Manhattan, where the brutal history of the slave trade has been deeply imprinted.

Smith’s debut book of nonfiction is a milestone of thought and insight that gives a new view of the positive role that memory and history may play in making sense of our society and how it has come to be, informed by scholarship and brought to life by the stories of individuals living now.
